5 Tips Guaranteed to Help You Climb the Corporate Ladder

Posted on 2016-08-09 by GenUK Dove

Whether you’ve been in your job for 1 month or 10 years, the chances are you spend your days working towards that next step up the corporate ladder. If you’re aiming for a new job role or a pay rise, following our 5 tips for career progression will help you achieve your goal in the workplace.

Network – follow that age old saying; It’s not what you know but who you know.

Go to as many networking events as you can and always have a business card to hand – you never know who you might bump into.
Generally people only begin networking when they are looking for a new job. However this is where many tend to fall at the first hurdle. For someone to want to help you out, they must first know, trust and like you. This is why it’s important to network and build authentic relationships even when you aren’t actively job seeking.
Whilst out of office networking is perceived to be more important, there’s nothing wrong with spending a little time networking within your office. Asking colleagues questions about their lives can help you build trust and relationships with the people who could help you advance to the next level. If you have strong inter-office relationships it will also mean that colleagues may resent you less should you overtake them on the way to the top.

Become a Resource – learn everything you can about your chosen field.

Don’t be afraid to put some time in after hours to research and learn all you can about your chosen job role. Not only will it benefit you, but it’ll also help build relationships with your peers if you are seen to be the person with all the answers.
Once you feel you’ve become an expert in your specific area, expand you knowledge and learn about subjects that are critical to the organisation. If you can see a gap in the company’s skill set, become the one to fill it. This is likely to not only get you noticed, but to potentially land you a new job role.
Doing all this extra research and learning will not only benefit you in your current role, but will also ensure that you stay up-to-date with the latest goings-on in your industry, making you more marketable.

Dress for Success – don’t dress for your job role, dress for the role you want to have.

By looking the part people are more likely to associate you with being the part and are more likely to consider you when a more senior role becomes available. If you work in a client- facing industry, always dress professionally so that you are prepared for an impromptu client meeting should a senior wish to invite you.
Recent studies have also shown that workers wearing nicer clothes felt more confident and therefore performed better in their day-to-day duties. Being seen by peers and seniors to have confidence also improved the way these employees were perceived.
Dressing above your current job level presents a view that you have the potential to rise to that level and that you are a valuable commodity a company or team would be lucky to have. Dressing for success is all about putting your best foot forward, whether it’s a job interview or in the work place; it could give you a head start on the competition.

Go Above and Beyond – Be proactive rather than reactive and you’ll go far.

Senior figures in the company will love it if you are going above and beyond your job role to further both yourself and the company. It shows you really care about the company and will help get you noticed by the powers above.
By adopting this strategy and planning ahead, you will be prepared when your boss puts you on the spot and you might find that you are already working on something they ask you to do. Doing things without needing to be asked will get you labelled as a self-starter capable of taking on more responsibility.
If you are looking for a promotion which involves taking on more responsibility, don’t wait to be given the additional duties, use your initiative and take on any new responsibilities that you can. Your peers will thank you for lightening their workload and your boss will see that you are capable of taking on more responsibility which will work wonders in helping you secure that long-awaited promotion.

Keep a File of Your Successes

When you’re embroiled in your day-to-day life, it can be hard to think back and recognise the progress you have made. Keeping track of your progress and successes will ensure you never lose sight of just how far you have come.

When you come to have a progress meeting or you want to ask for a pay rise having your achievements documented in an organised file will enable you to quickly make an evidence- backed case for why you deserve it. It’ll also come in handy when updating your CV and applying for new jobs.
